Distance learning has become an integral aspect of learning in 2024. According to Galway Academy, students are becoming more comfortable and satisfied with online learning because of the opportunities and ability to access more support from their educational institution.

A recent survey by Jisc, a UK-based non-profit digital data and technology agency, revealed that:

  • Students are now better able to access more support from their institution.
  • Students can now use more assistive technologies while they learn.

“It is clear that digital learning now forms an integral part of the higher education learning experience.” – Jisc

Galway Academy highlights some of the assistive technologies used by students, including:

  • Captions
  • Spelling/writing support
  • Screen reader
  • Transcripts
  • Dictation
  • Screen magnification

With these assistive technologies, international students can learn remotely with little to no difficulties.

How to improve the online experience to increase efficiency

Improving the online learning experience for students will go to great lengths to provide comfortable and satisfying learning for students.

Galway Academy highlights ways to improve the online experience:

  1. Provide students with short tutorials or how-to guides on how to use software that is important in their courses. These guides should be available for the students to watch anytime.
  2. Break information down into small bits for students to be able to navigate. Links should be provided for students to access.
  3. Online programs should accredit students for skills developed as part of or in addition to a course of study.
  4. Provide proactive check-in with students to identify additional support needs.
  5. Supports should be granted to students for transferable and in-demand skills such as coding and marketing.
